As County Hall closes amid a legionella discovery, Tom Collins, Labour’s candidate in the General Election, has slammed Conservative mismanagement of the public realm over their disastrous time in office.

Speaking in the aftermath of the closure, Mr Collins said –

“The situation at County Hall is symbolic of the mess our country faces after 14 years of chaos and decline under the Conservatives. The building is literally falling down, the water is unsafe, and it is people who are paying the price – with nowhere to work and an uncertain future. County Hall should be a source of pride for us, now it is hidden in shame behind safety fences.

There is no doubt that the blame lies at the feet of the Conservatives, both in Westminster and right here running our County Council. This is the result of austerity upon austerity, short-term thinking and sticking-plaster politics. And the building is just the latest victim, the failure of Children’s Services is front and centre in many local people’s minds – our children are paying the price.

We need change, we need a government that will deliver stability and has a plan to rebuild. Labour will get our country back on its feet, stabilising our economy, reviving our NHS, making our streets safe, investing in renewable energy and breaking down the barriers to opportunity for every child.

On 4th July, I urge everyone to do their bit to end this era of Conservative chaos by voting Labour – if we want change, we have to vote for it – we can’t afford to leave it to others.”
