Joy Squires, our former parliamentary candidate and long-standing and highly respected city councillor spoke about her experience as a local councillor.
Joy explained how her commitment to local community groups, and her political values led her to become politically active: in order to make progress it was necessary to be able to influence decision makers. Joy’s love of community and devotion to defending and promoting local citizens meant that in 2017 when she came within 2500 votes of becoming MP fr Worcester she explained how close she’s come to having leave all that behind and act on the national stage. Though performing the role of a councillor as well as you would like to is not easy, especially while in full-time employment, and though it can be challenging to keep having to try to overcome the intransigence of opposition councillors who, in Joy’s words are “decent but misguided”, in the round it is an immensely rewarding role.
