Friends,

Your Labour councillors urgently need your help to fight Tory privatisation plans!

Worcester City Council’s Tory administration has taken the decision to privatise the City Council’s Cleaner and Greener service – including grounds maintenance, parks, waste collection and street cleaning.

Your Labour councillors did all they could to stop this from happening but the Tories have the majority of votes on the City Council so their proposals were carried.

To try to salvage this crucial City Council service, Labour Councillors are proposing a motion at Council on Wednesday 30th September to allow an ‘in-house’ bid to be considered. The Tories have ruled this out so far, in favour of a private company taking over.

We need your help to convince the Tories to allow this to go forward.

Please email and/or telephone your local city councillors (especially the Tory councillors!) to urge them to support Labour’s motion.

You can find details of your local councillors here

This is the wording of the motion we are putting forward on Wednesday.

“This Council commends our City Council staff for their achievements in delivering increasingly efficient and responsive services for refuse collection, street cleaning, parks and grounds maintenance in recent years.

We believe that the City Council’s own Cleaner and Greener service should be allowed to compete to continue to provide these services.

We therefore ask the Managing Director to provide the necessary support for an in-house bid from the City Council for joint procurement of these City services along with those for Malvern Hills District Council and Wychavon Council”

Thanks for your support.

Joy Squires
Deputy Labour Group Leader

PS Labour councillors are also putting forward a motion at Council on Wednesday asking for more help for refugees
