Plans to transform Worcester’s former Debenhams building into a new hotel have been welcomed as a major step forward for the city centre.
A proposal to redevelop the long-empty site on Worcester High Street would see the building brought back into use as a hotel, helping to boost footfall and support the wider local economy.
The plans, which have been given the go-ahead by Worcester City Council, aim to breathe new life into one of the city’s most prominent vacant buildings. The former department store has stood empty since 2021, following the collapse of Debenhams.
Bringing a key city centre site back to life
The redevelopment would see the building converted into a hotel with modern facilities, creating a new destination in the heart of Worcester. The project is expected to attract visitors, support local businesses, and contribute to the ongoing regeneration of the city centre.
City leaders have emphasised the importance of bringing vacant sites back into productive use, particularly in key locations like the High Street.
A positive step for Worcester
Welcoming the plans, Pat Agar said:
“It’s always encouraging to see investment in Worcester and plans that bring empty buildings back into use.
This is a significant site in the heart of our city, and its redevelopment will help support local businesses and strengthen our city centre.”
The scheme has received planning approval, with work expected to begin once final arrangements are in place.
Supporting a thriving city centre
Projects like this form part of a wider effort to ensure Worcester’s city centre remains vibrant, accessible, and economically strong.
By attracting visitors and creating new opportunities, developments such as the former Debenhams site can play a key role in supporting jobs, local businesses, and community life.
