A long-awaited upgrade to a busy crossing in Warndon has been welcomed by local Labour councillors after years of campaigning by residents.
The crossing on Windermere Drive, close to Sainsbury’s and a busy bus stop, has been converted into a signal-controlled Puffin crossing following longstanding concerns about safety.
Residents had repeatedly raised concerns about the location, which many felt was dangerous to cross, particularly during busy periods.
The improvement follows a serious incident in February 2024 in which local resident Emma Pryor suffered life-threatening injuries after being struck by a car while crossing the road.
Warndon Councillor Jill Desayrah said:
“We have had many complaints about this location. For years, it has been a place where people felt they were taking their lives into their hands simply trying to get to and from Sainsbury’s or from the bus stop.”
Councillor Ed Kimberley welcomed the upgrade but said it had taken too long for action to be taken.
“The new light-controlled crossing is a huge improvement and will make this road safer for everyone who uses it.
However, it is deeply regrettable that local concerns were not acted upon sooner. Residents had been raising safety issues for years, and it should not take a serious accident before improvements are made.”
Councillors also thanked local residents who signed petitions, raised concerns and continued to press for action.
“This change shows what can be achieved when local people come together and make their voices heard,” said Cllr Kimberley.
In addition to the new crossing, speed cushions have also been installed along Windermere Drive between Blackpole Road and the entrance to Sainsbury’s as part of wider road safety improvements.
